Flick Off

With all the fervour of nine-year-old schoolboys, grown-up players battled for four hours in a charity Subbuteo tournament in Tunbridge Wells.

Playing host to the hotly-contested games was Panoramic Wealth Management, at its offices in London Road.

And football was certainly coming home, as Subbuteo was invented in Langton Green in the late 1940s by Peter Adolph. It went on to be played around the world – its moulded figures and the necessary flick technique enthralling a generation.

The recent tournament in Tunbridge Wells was set up in a World Cup format and teams competed for the Langton Green Subbuteo Cup.

Panoramic's chartered financial planner Gary Jefferies said: "We had held these many years ago but as we are now back in Tunbridge Wells we thought for a bit of light-hearted relief it would be good to start up again."

Mr Jefferies said business people from firms across the town took part in the tournament and some enjoyed "recapturing their youth with a game many have not played for 30 or 40 years".

He added: "The game also actually holds special affection for older residents in the Tunbridge Wells area who painted players for many years."

Each player was charged a match fee which helped the company raise £150 for Ellenor, the Tunbridge Wells mayor's charity and children's hospice covering west Kent and East Sussex.

Mr Jefferies went head-to-head with professional golfer Jamie Spence in the final, with Mr Jefferies winning on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

Head of community at Ellenor, Linda Trew, said: "We are so grateful to Panoramic Wealth Management for organising a fantastic Subbuteo tournament in aid of ellenor.

"The money raised from the tournament will help us to continue to support families facing terminal illness."
